About the Role

Mentor and Peer Support: Provide one-on-one and group peer support to children of incarcerated parents, sharing personal experiences and strategies for coping and resilience.

Program Facilitation: Assist in the implementation of peer support programs, mentoring initiatives, and group activities that promote emotional well-being, social skills, and character development.

Resource Connection: Help connect families to community resources and services, including counseling, educational support, and recreational activities.

Crisis Intervention: Recognize signs of distress or crisis in clients and provide immediate support or referral to appropriate services.

Documentation: Maintain accurate and confidential records of client interactions, program participation, and progress in accordance with organizational policies.

Collaboration: Work closely with other team members, including therapists and social workers, to coordinate support services.

Training and Development: Participate in ongoing training and professional development to enhance skills in peer support, trauma-informed care, and child development.

Working Conditions:
This position may involve occasional travel within the community for outreach and support activities.
Flexibility to work evenings or weekends as needed to accommodate client schedules.

Requirements


  • Must be at least 18 years old.

  • Must be able to provide proof of completion of peer support specialist training with 2 years working children or families facing adversity, such as trauma, loss, and/or incarceration.

  • Lived experience as a child of an incarcerated parent

  • Strong communication and active listening skills to build trust with children and families while maintaining confidentiality in a supportive, non-judgmental environment.

  • Demonstrated empathy and compassion for children facing the challenges of parental incarceration.

  • Culturally sensitive and aware of diversity to effectively support individuals from various backgrounds.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and professionals, such as parents, clinical staff, case managers, and educators, to provide holistic support to children and families.

  • Proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite and video conferencing platforms such as Zoom.
